What's the best baby food to start out with?

Question: What's the best baby food to start out with?

(Posted by: newmom on 2009-08-24 07:56:25)

My baby is six months and has only had breast milk and small amounts of rice cereal until now. I tried to give him a little apple juice (mostly water), he wouldn't take it. Only about 1/ 2 an oz. Then I mixed the juice with the rice. He ate it but made faces the whole time. Last night I gave him some apple sauce and he made a face every bite. Does he hate apples or is it because he is not use to flavor?

He's unused to the flavour.

If he's opening his mouth for the spoon and not spitting it out, I'd assume that he likes it well enough, but may find it a bit tart or just 'different.' There is no one 'best' food to start with. Whatever you choose to offer and your baby enjoys is fine. If he continues to 'make faces' though, you might hold off on solids for a few more weeks. It IS just for fun, and if he isn't enjoying it, there's no point in continuing.

Our pediatrican told us to start with veggies...the green ones then the orange ones. Then go to the fruits and then go the the meats. You are suppose to start them on a new food every 3 days.....that way you can see if they do/ don't have an allergy to that type of food. I hope this helps!! :)

Well, i wouldn't try mixing cereal with liquids such as juice from a bottle. cereal is meant to be a solid and taken with a spoon, otherwise, there is a risk of baby choking (disregard this comment if you meant that you added the juice and fed with a spoon). i dont think your son necessarily "hates " apples, but he is just getting used to new textures and flavours. sometimes, i find that the apple sauce i feed my son can be a bit sour. people used to start babies with veggies and fruit, but it is actually recommended that babies start with proteins such as chicken, roast beef, etc (pureed of course!!). my son's first real food was pureed chicken! he loved it. most people still start with veggies though. if you choose this route, maybe start with something like sweet potato or peas. babies like a sweet taste which comes to no surprise since their milk is sweet tasting. best of luck, and i hope this helps!!!

He's probably making the face just because of the new taste and feel. My baby did that to when I first started feeding them solids. I give my babies banana and cereal mixed together and they love that. Maybe try something sweeter...? Good luck!

Well with any child, doctors are now saying that juice isn't great for babies anymore and is rather unhealthy. I started my daughter on rice cereal, and veggies. If you start with fruit first babies have a tendency to get used to the sweet taste so when you introduce veggies later they won't eat it b/ c its bitter tasting. Plus, so anytime you start on solid foods, start small, and keep using the same kind for a few days, this way you can see if he's allergic, and this will give him a chance to get used to the taste. So first veggies, carrots, squash etc. Then fruits. Don't worry about the juice, and make sure if you do give juice its in a sippy cup and not a bottle!!! If her can't hold a sippy on his own yet, you can help him, or wait awhile. It's not nessary at this time anyways!!! Good luck!!

Its a new flavor mostly.. try a verity of flavors. my Baby loves apples and granola (hes 9 months) check at your local walmart and go for the gerber foods, they have "stages " and the container tells you which food is ok for your baby's age. Try a whole variety

New flavors are very strong to infants, they make strange faces because it's a totally new experience for them. I alternated with my babies, veggie then fruit. They say to try a single veggie/ fruit for several days to make sure that there is no allergy. I started with Peas, then went to applesauce, then green beans, then pears, etc. I would alternate, then before you know it they will be able to eat a whole host of different things and you will know which ones are their favorites. Best wishes!

My baby does the same thing with every new food, the key is to keep trying. Most parents think their baby doesn't like that particular food and give up. I keep making my son eat his food (like carrots) and pretend i eat it too, after a few bites he eats no problem. They love bananas but it can make them constipated so start off with something easy like pears or peas then every few days give him something diff.
