Question: Is 6 months the right time to start baby food and sippy cups?

Ok so my sons doctor told me to start giving him rice cereal when he was 4 months and so far he has been doing great on it with barely a mess. He is 6 months old now so is this the time I want to start introducing number 1 baby foods (from the jars) and sippy cups (I know I saw sippy cups that say 4 months- 9months but not sure) ? Should be be able to have juice now too? When did you start your children on all of this? To frogysue: The juice I was going to get says on the bottle that it is diluted and it has barely any sugar in it. It is the same price as regular juice too.

My dd did start stage 1 -type foods around 6 months - it is considered a fine time to start on those. We also got a sippy cup around that age. I would say that between 6-7 months, a lot of babies just play with the cup, that between 7-8 months a lot of babies can drink out of the cup if you hold it for them, and around 8-9 months a lot of babies get the picture and can use the cup all by themselves. That of course is a total generalization based on my dd and the other babies we know - there is no harm in introducing the cup now (in fact, it will help them become familar with it), just don't necessarily expect him to get it overnight. Juice is something that is starting to be more and more discouraged by drs because it is so sugary. So while a 6-month baby can have juice, it should be watered down with at least an equal amount of water, and you shouldn't give too much (I think the AAP says 4 oz or less for kids under the age of 2 years). My dd is about 10 months now; I have given her juice on several occassions, but more regularly give her just water in the cup.

My doctor said no juice yet, because their bodies won't be able to use it. It would be just like water. I know I've read when to start it. Look it up and you'll find the answer. But yeah, you can start fruits and vegetables now (the 1st foods). My son will only eat his cereal if I mix some fruit in it for him! Good luck! = ]

I stared on 1st foods veggies, green beans, then peas, then sweet potatos and squash, then i tried the fruits, She loved them all. I waited four days in between, just to be safe for allergies. I introduced juice at about 7 months, i was going on an airplane ride with her and I know sometimes she doesnt want formula, so that was a fall back, something sweet. I did half juice and half water in a bottle, i use the sippy cup with her snacks, I started that around 8 months i guess. She would get some gerber puffs and the sippy cup. She already had 4 teeth.

You start baby food at 4 months unless breastfeeding some don't and a sippy cup at about 12 months

My dd started solid at 5.5mos as instructed by ped; she only gets water and milk still at 14 mos...she eats her fruit, so there is no need to give her sugary juice; only time she gets any is apple if she's a little constipated, and then only and ounce or two a day.....i have offered the sippy since she started solids, with only sips of water first; now that she's older she can drink what she wants....hth
