Question: Is it worth buying organic over none organic baby food?
(Posted by: Stacey on 2008-05-30 17:23:39)
I have a 7 month old! And all I buy is organic baby food but the formula isn't. I don't buy any other products that are 100 % natural such as baby shampoo, etc. I feel like I am not a good enough mom because my friend gives her baby everything natural including diapers...

Does not matter.... I'm sure you did not have organic stuff when you were a baby but you are still alive & healthy right! Organic is obviously much healthier of course!

Organic food is proven to be healtier. However, the other organic products are up to you. Basically it comes down to conserving the environment and maintaining sustainability. I would say you are doing just fine with organic baby food, but buying natural diapers won't really offer any direct benefits to you or your baby. You are are not doing a bad job as a mom because you aren't buying all natural products. You are being more conscientious than most parents by buying your baby organic food rather than conventional food. As long as your child is healthy and happy, you are doing a great job! Here is an expert from a research essay I wrote from the pro-organic farming stance, it should help answer your question. Also, if you want the entire 5 page essay and my full list of sources, email me, and I would be happy to send it to you = ) It can be concluded that with the use of highly regulated fertilizing methods and minimal use of pesticides, organic food is safer and provides more health benefits than non-organic foods. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, there is no difference between non-organic and organic food. The Agency, however, may have overlooked a study which reviewed 150 research projects comparing organic and non-organic food. This study confirmed the fact that there are fewer undesirable contaminants, and higher desirable components, such as vitamins and minerals, in organic food. Toxico-pathologist, Dr. Vyvyan Howard, comments on the trend towards organic food on the consumer’s behalf, saying, “people are applying the precautionary principle to their own lives by purchasing food that has not been produced by industrial methods. From the simple stance of hazard avoidance, organically produced food is the best option that we have. " Furthermore, a recent study of controlled feeding trials found significant improvements in the health of animals given organic feed (Heaton). Another study done by the University of Washington compared eighteen children who ate organic food with twenty-one children who ate conventionally produced food, all around the same age, gender, and family income bract. After three days, the children who ate only organic food tested with far lower levels of pesticide byproducts, known as metabolites, in their system (Stacy H.). These studies alone prove that eating organic food has positive effects on health. Whether or not one believes there is a difference between organic and non-organic food, one should consider what benefits naturally produced food should have on health. Chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics used to mass-produce food can’t possibly have positive health effects. Also, to those of you who say organic produce is a scam and rip off, consider.... Despite the slightly higher cost of purchasing organic food at the register, it is cheaper than non-organic food in the long run. Non-organic food cost consumers three times over – first over the counter, second via taxation to fund agricultural subsidies, and third to remedy the environmental pollution caused by intensive farming practices. All-in-all, organic food provides sustainability for the environment and consumer.

Natural is the way to go. I found out normal baby food have added preservatives which can make the baby change its diet to make it harder on you. Not good.

Let me tell you girl, I work at a daycare, with 100+ kids everyday, and organic or non organic, to them it is ALL the same. I'd save your money, childcare can get expensive.

For the most part "organic " is a marketing scam. It sounds great, but it doesn't really mean anything.

That's her lifestyle.. not yours who cares. Personally I see no difference in organic baby food... maybe when older though. But the food thing is enough... and if your can afford it go ahead cause prices are going up enough.

No. The whole Organic movement is bull. The people telling you that organic products are better for you are not scientists, they have not done studies on these things, they are just trying to make a buck. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BELIEVE THAT NATURAL = HEALTHY. Research it.

O please. Organic is not all that is cracked up to be. You are doing fine. Not like the baby will eat only organic and wear only organic for the rest of it's life.

In all honesty, no. As long as your little one is healthy, fed, clothed, well loved, nurtured... you're doing a good job. I never bought organic products, and I'm a pretty good Mom to my children. They're happy, healthy, loved...

I don't think it matters that much i know i eat all non-organic foods. though, non-organic foods make children grow up faster (go through puberty sooner) this is because of all the artificial growth hormones they give the plants and animals. when they do this the plants/ animals get bigger sooner and the farmers can harvest/ sell them sooner, making more money for themselves. hope this helped!

Each mom is different. You do not need to buy just organic for your baby but you do need to pay attention to the inert ingredients and contents that you buy and what effects they can cause to human skin. 1.) Paraben is toxic. 2.) Fluoride highly toxic. 3.) Hormone injected milk, horrible. 4.) Iron fortified cereal with traces of iron fillings in it. Poison! 5.) Chlorinated bath and drinking water. Bad for the arteries and poison. 6.) Chemically treated diapers and clothing.

Just give your baby food you eat! why even buy baby food, at her age she should be able to eat some table foods, you can buy organic veggies and fruits and give them to her. i do believe in buying organic whenever possible and if it is a quality product. (esp with dairy and meat since they pump those things full of steroids and hormones) baby food? i would make my own or again, just give her food i eat (in smaller pieces) edit: and for those who don't think it means anything there is a reason the USDA labels things as certified organic, maybe you need to read up on what organic actually means. give me cage free, steroid free chicken any day over 10 chickens stuffed together in cages and pumped full of steroids to make them big and fat. or cows pumped full of growth hormones...
