Jarred baby food vs formula?

Question: Jarred baby food vs formula?

(Posted by: ??? on 2010-01-07 08:00:59)

My son is just under 5 month the doc said to start him on rice cereal at 4.5 month he is very tall and skinny for his age. I have been giving r 3 table spoons of rice cereal mixed with a lil formula ALONG with that he get 6 oz 3 times a day breakfast lunch dinner in between breakfast and lunch he gets just 9 oz and in between lunch and dinner her gets another 9 oz so i think once i start him on jarred food at 5 month he will be getting one jar 2.5 3 times a day ALONG with the 6 oz of milk and then 9 oz 2 times in between is that correct? so again to be clear. 6 oz 2 times daily ALONG with 3 table spoons of rice cereal and then 9 oz 2 times daily so a total of 36 oz milk excluding the rice cereal my son is 26 inch long and weights 15 lbs I am not starting him on jar food just yet the doc said till he 5 month and 1 weeks so in another 2 weeks i should be able to start him. i am just getting an idea.

My son is 5 months this is what he eats. 4 or 5 6 oz bottles through out the day, after his second bottle of the day which is lunch time any were from 12 2 he will have 1 jar of baby food I give him half of a jar of veggies then a half of a jar of fruits. Before bed he gets oatmeal cereal mixed with 4 Oz's of formula and a jar of pears or apple sauce. When you first start you want to do veggies first, I would purchase a few different flavors but stick with one kind for a few days in case he is allergic to that type, After he is good on all the veggies you have let him try then start bringing in the fruits along with it just as you did the veggies one at a time for a few days in case of allergies. If the baby is not interested in solids or is not good on taking them then hold off a while. Also do not take away any of there formula you still need to be giving them the same amount you just add in the baby food for fun and to learn how to eat with a spoon. A baby should have 24 to 30 oz of formula a day.

I would say he needs more formula at that age. At 5 months his main nutrition should be the formula, the jar food and cereal is to basically just get him ready for table food.

I think he need to me on more milk than food milk is better for them i would stay on the baby rice but up his milk and wait a little for the jarred food

3 Tablespoons of cereal twice a day is quite a bit for a 5 month old. If he is eating it and doing okay with it, its probably fine but don't force him to eat so much. If you are going to start adding vegetables and fruits I wouldn't cut back on the amount of formula yet (this is how babies get almost all of their nutrition and calories), just add them to the solid foods that he is already eating.

I'll admit to being very puzzled as to why your doctor thinks that being 'tall and skinny' means that your baby needs rice cereal. If he's too thin, offering more formula (which contains more fat and calories, and 36 ounces is nowhere near too much) would make far more sense. But ... if you trust the doctor, we'll go with what you're doing. Continue to offer his usual formula. (36 ounces is a good amount if he's happy with it. But if he wants 40 or 42 ounces, that's ok too.) Once or twice a day, AFTER a regular bottle, offer some solids (cereal or jarred food, whatever you want to offer and he enjoys) and let him eat as much as he enjoys. If he took enough formula, he probalby wont' want much, and that's fine. But I definitely wouldn't be offering solids more than twice a day at this age, and just once a day is probably better.
