My son is 4 months old and i breast feed him during the day and formula feed him during the night... we started him on similac advanced and he had terrible gas so we switched to the similac for gas, fussiness, and spit up, it was a soy product... but i still found him having the terrible gas along with constipation... so i have now switched him to enfamil premium with lipil and he's still having a problem with constipation and he's very fussy now... but it has only been 2 days since we switched.. does anyone have any suggestions for a really good formula or how long should i wait before i try another one if his constipation doesn't go away because its really bothering him he will not sleep

Wow. Mine primarily had breast milk, but we enriched with a small amount of Similac NeoSure, per pediatrician's recommendation. (She was 2 months premature and needed the extra calories and iron.) She was occasionally gassy and hiccupy, but nothing Mylicon or gripe water wouldn't handle, no constipation problems. Now that she's outstripping my supply, we have her on the Similac Advance. She's not having any problems with it. Can you check the amount of iron in the formula you're giving him? While we never had constipation problems, our pediatrician did warn us to keep an eye on it, because iron can cause constipation. Similac does make a 'sensitive' formula. Maybe try that instead of the soy? I don't know anything about the Enfamil products, so can't make a recommendation there. If all else fails, maybe you ask your pediatrician if you can give him some watered down apple juice at four months. That might help with the constipation problem, too. Best of luck.

Firstly I've so been there with the constipation issues, both my daughters had it. I use nestle good start formula. Also offering a few ounces of sterilized water each day can help with the constipation. I would give it a week before switching. It's hard on their bodies if you change foods too often. The iron in formula really does constipate most babies. Once he is taking cereal, I add two-three spoons of prunes to it to help her go. Hope this helps.

Ask your doctor but if you can think about giving him breast milk at night. Maybe pumping it or whatever so it's ready. If he hasn't done well with a regular cow milk based formula or a soy based you have to try a formula with gentle proteins. Enfamil Gentlease or the Similac/ Nestle/ store brand equivalent is what you should try next.

My daughter had the same problem with constipation. I am allergic to milk protein so in case she is I give her soy. Emfamil Prosobee and Similiac Isomil (both soy) gave her gas and constipation so I switched her to Good Start and she has been doing much better on it! I would suggest Good Start and you can also give him a few ounces of water a day and that should help with the constipation as well.
