Question: Question about making my own baby food...?
(Posted by: beliz on 2010-03-06 19:44:32)
In a few weeks my little guy (exclusively breastfed) will be 6 months and in anticipation of starting solids I was researching how to make baby food. I found a great website (wholesomebabyfood.com) that has everything you ever wanted to know and more about the making of baby food. The first few foods they recommend starting with are sweet potatoes, avacados, bananas, pears, and apples (http:/ / www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ startingsolidfood- schedule.htm). It seems like a really knowledgeable and reputable site, but I've always heard that you should start out with the veggies because if they have the sweet stuff first, they might not like the veggies later. Any stock to this, or does it really matter what they start out with?

Awesome, I use that website too. My son is also exclusively breastfed and I started giving him solids a week short of six months. The first thing I introduced was banana, he loved it! Now I don't know about other babies but my son did not get hooked on fruits, he will eat the veggies too. He likes carrots, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, peas, banana, apple, avocado, you name it. I also give him his rice cereal. My advice would be to go with what you are most comfortable, besides if he doesn't want a certain vegetable one day he might want it when you try again on another day. Good luck.

Well I started off with a good organic baby cereal first and foremost. Then I introduced the veggies (all the ones you listed along with carrots, squash, broccoli, etc.). Single veggie at first and then you can start mixing (carrots and avacados are a good combo as they don't need to be warmed up. You can also add Spirulina in very small doses to it for added vitamins. I waited until about 7 or 8 months for the fruit because it is true you want them to actually like the taste of veggies which are not sweet like fruit is. Remember to wait until 9 months before adding protein.

Haha, my son and niece ate everything even though we started off with fruit. I have many cousins that I helped take care of and the same with them. So I haven't found any truth to this.

Always do veggies first....they get hooked on the sweet stuff....after a while , when you know there are no allergic reactions, do fruit....baby might not want veggies so you will have to find veggies to mix with fruit... dont forget to add a little rice, oatmeal, or wheat just to get it thick enough to stay on the spoon , but not too thick 4 baby.............. BREASTFED 4.........

I read somewhere that this theory was false, because breast milk is sweet so babies are already used to the sweet tastes. I really think its just an old wives tale. I started my daughter with avocados then some sweeter veggies like squash and sweet potatoes, then fruits. She still likes the avocados and other non sweet veggies.
