Questions for those of you who make your own baby food?

Question: Questions for those of you who make your own baby food?

(Posted by: Mommy of 3 yo & 7 mo boys :-) on 2010-03-04 10:43:06)

So with baby #2 I am planning on making my own baby food. What is the best way to store it? I wasn't to make a lot and freeze it. Should I get this?... http:/ / www.toysrus.com/ product/ index.jsp?productId=2721830 Also, how would I heat it up? I have a bottle warmer that also works for baby food, but I'd have to put it in another container to heat? Should I buy and save the individual glass baby food jars and freeze them? What tips do you have for me? Also, does anyone have any recipes for baby food (stage 1) or know of any helpful sites for it? All input is appreciated. :- )

You can get those or you can just use ice trays from the dollar store... tha'ts what I use.. they're the same thing. I got a bunch of empty babyfood jars from my sister-in-law... she has 2 boys and when I got pregnant I told her to save the jars from their food so I had a head start on that... I make the food and put them in the ice trays to freeze, then once they're frozen I pop them out and put the cubes in a ziplock baggie and label it and put it back in the fridge. I take a couple cube out to thaw for the next day... Sometimes, I do put the food in a babyfood jar and freeze that whole thing.. it just depends if I have any emptry ice trays or not. But either way, the empty baby food jars come in handy when you're going out of the house and need to bring food with you... I just put a couple of the cubes into a jar and let it thaw as the day goes on!

I freeze baby food in regular ice cube trays. Once they are frozen I pop them out and into a ziploc freezer bag. I get out food the night before and defrost it in the fridge. If you want to heat it just a few sec in the microwave is enough. wholesomebabyfood.com has great recipes and advice as does homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/

Those trays would work great. I always used the microwave to heat up my baby food, but you could probably use a bottle warmer (I've never used one so I'm not sure how they work). Once you have made the food and frozen it, just place the frozen cubes into a Ziploc storage bag, and freeze until needed. Take out what you need as you need it. Recipes... you don't need one. For stage 1 food, it's simply the whole food. Steam whichever veggie you want to try that week, let it cool down, then toss in a food processor or baby food blender. Place in the trays and freeze.

I wouldn't buy those. Just get a couple of extra regular ice cube trays, when they are frozen pop them out into Ziplock bags and label with item and date. Stage 1 is just individual fruits and veggies, just bake or steam and blend simple as that. Check out wholebabyfoods.com and Annabel Karmel's website for more specifics.

I take 1 cup dry rice + 2/ 3 cup moong dal en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Moong_dal In the pan warm the mix for 10/ 15 min stirring continuously. After that grind it and store it at dry place (out of freeze mostly) When I need to prepare baby food. I boil half cup water and just add/ sprinkle 1/ 2 spoon of this powder in boiling water, very very little salt with shaker. It forms thick paste. It has proteins from moong dal. When my son started eating considerably I started cooking some vegatable like green bean/ sweet potato / pumpkin + 1 spoon rice(whole) + 1 spoon moong dal (whole) cook it and make paste and feed him.

Jarred food is still your safest bet when traveling, but making your own baby food otherwise will save you a ton of money. You can use any standard ice cube tray. You don't need some specialized gimmick, overpriced tray. Do NOT freeze baby food jars. They have often cracked and broken in the freeze and let me tell you what kind of a mess that is! A hand blender works for everything but meat and is easier to clean than a blender. You may still need the blender for meat things. I suggest that you buy frozen vegetables. They are packed and frozen the same day that they are picked. I also suggest using organic for things normally high in pesticides.
