How and when do you transition from formula to just baby food?

Question: How and when do you transition from formula to just baby food?

(Posted by: rtmcdermott on 2010-02-06 22:13:26)

I have a 7 month old son who just started eating first stage baby food (sweet potatoes and green beans) and he LOVES it. He is still taking the same amount of formula that he was prior to starting solids because I'm only giving the solids to him once to twice a day and he only gets half the container. Is that enough/ too much/ just right for a beginner? When and how should start giving him more solids and less formula? Thank you!

Your baby should never eat "just baby food ". Right now your schedule for solids sounds fine, I wouldn't offer anymore until he's been on solids for 2-3 weeks so you can monitor his formula intake. It should NOT decrease at this age as solids are just for fun and practice. My son started cutting out formula feedings at 9 months with no pushing by me. That's how it should be so you know your baby is getting exactly what they need. He should be getting at least 24 oz. of formula for now and you shouldn't notice it decreasing until he's a few months older. Up until a year formula(or breast milk) is a baby's main source of nutrition.

Baby food in jars and purees are TRAINING food, formula should remain their primary source of nutrients and continue to be offered BEFORE the solids until the time when they are completely on table foods and no longer getting the purees. Formula or breastmilk should remain their primary food until AFTER the first birthday at the earliest.
