How did your baby react the first time he/she ate baby food - meat?

Question: How did your baby react the first time he/she ate baby food - meat?

(Posted by: amber 18 on 2007-05-21 05:03:19)

I gave my son chicken/ rice at dinner time 2 nights ago and then a bottle at bedtime (1 hour later.) He was up most of the night screaming/ crying. It seemed like his belly hurt or he had gas really bad. We tried again yesterday (at lunch time instead) and he did the same thing in the afternoon during his nap. Is this an allergic reaction, or just normal because his body has never had this type of food before? What did your baby do? Should we keep giving it to him - and just see if it gets better?

Well, my son's first reaction was "blah!! " So I started real small..... a drop of meat to a large portion of fruit (he loved fruit) and little by little increased the meat until it was half and half. I suggest you try the same and watch for reactions. If you get the same reaction, don't bother....you can get protein into your baby in other ways.

My son loves meat in his food, though he does prefer veggies. What I found the best the first time with meat is, add a tiny bit to a mix of say pumpkin, corn and sweet potato, because they are nice and sweet. Then at every meal/ day add more meat to the mix, so he gets used to it's flavor.

Mine made faces...she ate it, but wasn't too crazy about it. I also tried giving her straight pureed chicken and she just wasn't having it. I tried apples &chicken from Beechnut over the weekend, because I want her to have more protein. As it is right now she only has cereal, fruit and veg's. I thought the apples would "offset " the chicken..she did really well - ate the whole jar. So maybe it's just a bit too much for him at once. Try a little at a time, with a fruit or veg. If you get the same reaction, maybe he does in fact have some sort of aversion to it. Talk to his ped. Good luck!
